Technology Bundle Information
MBJH students receive the Technology Bundle as a part of their General Services Fee each school year. With the bundle students receive a Chromebook, support/repairs, filtering, secure access, and selected software. Thanks to the Mountain Brook City Schools Foundation for their ongoing and generous support!
Repairs and Warranty
Technical Problems or Unintentional Damage
The Dell Chromebooks purchased by Mountain Brook Schools are covered by a basic Dell warranty. The warranty covers the machine for hardware failures, such as:
- Will not charge or will not turn on
- Internal component failure
- Keyboard or touchpad not working
The following are examples of incidents not covered by the Dell warranty, for which the burden of repair and/or replacement cost will fall on the parent.
- Damage due to fire, natural disasters or other
- Intentional damage, such as abuse or vandalism
- Loss or theft of the Chromebook
- Repeated or excessive incidents of damage
In the event that the Chromebook develops a technical problem or is damaged, the issue must be reported to the local school technology coordinator and brought to the Technology Hub. The technology coordinator will handle getting the machine serviced and back into operation. For theft of a Chromebook, a police report will be filed.
Excessive or Repeated Damage or Loss
In the event of repeated or excessive damage, the technology department will determine if the machine can be repaired for a reasonable cost. The cost of the repair will be communicated to, and the responsibility of, the parent. In the event the machine is lost, stolen or damaged beyond reasonable repair, the fee to reimburse MBS will be as follows:

Why is the Chromebook the best device?
The Chromebook was selected by a committee of students, teachers, and parents based on instructional needs. Windows, Apple, and Chrome devices were reviewed. While all devices evaluated had unique features, the Chromebook was selected because it met the identified criteria at a lower price point versus higher price point devices. The Chromebook offers the tools necessary to assist learning without distracting students with additional features.
Will students take the device home?
Yes, MBJH students will have access to the devices at home and at school. Incoming 7th grade Students will be issued a Chromebook the first week back in school.
How do MBJH teachers use Chromebooks for learning?
Chromebooks have been available to teachers and students at MBJH for several years. During this time, our faculty has become well-versed in using the devices for instructional purposes. Our instructional technology view is that devices are tools to help guide learning. Devices do not replace teachers and/or student interaction, but instead enhance learning opportunities. Though MBJH does not believe students should be on devices too often, teachers have become skilled in leveraging online resources to maximize student learning and overall experience.
Will the Chromebooks be returned in May for the summer?
No, MBJH students will be able to keep devices over the summer. Students can also opt to turn them in the last day of school in May and then be reissued Chromebooks in August.
What if I have my own device? Can I bring it to school?
Students are allowed to bring their own devices to school; however, the device included in the Technology Bundle will be used in classrooms to enhance instruction and learning. Personal devices should be kept in student lockers during the school day.
What if the device breaks?
When a device has an issue or breaks, students should bring the Chromebook to the Tech Hub between 7:30-7:55am. Students will be issued a loaner device until the other is fixed and returned.
What if I lose my assigned Chromebook?
Students should contact the local school technology coordinator. The TC will help the student with the process of replacing the device.
What if I leave my device at home?
Students are expected to bring the device to school each day as they would other school supplies.
Is this optional?
The technology bundle is a part of the required technology fee paid for each student at registration each year. The technology bundle consists of a companion device (Dell touchscreen Chromebook), technology support and repairs, filtering, management, secure Wi-Fi access, and software (Google Apps for Education and Microsoft 365).
What applications are available?
A Chromebook is a lightweight device designed to provide fast access to online resources as well as the capability to work offline. Students will be able to access most Internet-based resources for curriculum purposes. Production tools will include Google Apps for Education and Office 365 which both offer calendars for organization, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and audio and video capabilities. Chrome is the main web browser and provides access to many applications for the classroom.
How will students learn to use the Chromebook?
Training will be provided the first week of school during class. Short videos and how-to information will be available on our website.
What type of filtering is done through the school system?
Content that is shared through student email and saved in the cloud is filtered for inappropriate and/or questionable content in an effort to keep our students safe. In the event that inappropriate content is found, the student will receive a warning email. If deemed appropriate to elevate the issue, the incident will be reported to the school and school officials will follow typical protocols to keep students safe or correct any inappropriate behavior.
Furthermore, MBJH teachers are trained in Hapara, a program designed to monitor student use during instruction.
